A Shot Across the Bow

Post date: Tuesday, February 7th, 2023

Skin care commercials may trumpet fear of “alligator flaky skin”, but for a manatee, that’s a good thing, as algae often grows on the backs and tails of manatees, which makes their skin appear green or brown. However, manatee skin (although leathery and wrinkled) is constantly flaking off, shedding those unwanted passengers.

Although the various algae colors and patterns may differentiate manatees one from another, the constant between all manatees is size: enormous. The average manatee weighs 1,000 pounds, but can be as large as 3,500 pounds. There are no manatees named “Twiggy”.

Recently, research has shown that one’s genetic predisposition for obesity is roughly 25%. However, in some families (humans), due to the prevalence of certain genes, the likelihood of genetic obesity is as high as 80% - a manatee-like gene pool. Of my last three generations, 83% were obese. That would explain why I’m always hungry – even after eating, and why it was a constant challenge – will power being overwhelmed by a genetic heritage. So… what can one do?

One (me) seeks medical help. They determine I’m high in A1C and prescribe Trulicity, which both reduces my pre-diabetic level of A1C and decreases the constant hunger. It works!

Massive hunger pangs are kept at bay.

But it involves a weekly shot – yuck. So, I make a pact with myself: if I stick to a diet/exercise/sleep regimen, I don’t have to take my shot. But if the cravings are too strong, I take my shot. Either way, I will become less manatee-esque over time. We’ll all see how it works out!
