Manatee in the Mirror

Post date: Sunday, February 5th, 2023

It is quite unnerving to come face to face with a manatee, especially when it is inside your house.

The manatee’s jowly face was puffy in the dim early morning light, with scraggly gray hairs giving it a disheveled look, as if it had newly adopted the life of a hobo.

The manatee had clearly just awakened, as its eyes were barely open, with a look of bewilderment and alarm under its droopy eyelids.

Then, as I slowly awakened, I realized the manatee was wearing glasses. My admittedly sketchy knowledge of those flabby creatures known as sea cows was that they were herbivores, thrived in warm water, were not fans of outboard motors, and had a pleasant demeanor – but no recollection of spectacles was lodged in the depths of my groggy morning semi-functioning brain.

As was my custom, to not wake my wife, I had not turned any lights on in my shambling trip to the bathroom, so it was illuminated solely by whatever scraps of moonlight made it through the vine-covered window. As I blearily peered at the manatee, I noticed that it was aping every movement of my head in perfect synchrony.

At that moment, I realized I was looking in the mirror – my face bloated from sleep, a recent neck surgery, and forty years of culinary overindulgence – and a matching blobby body, needing only flippers to complete the manatee likeness.

It was clearly time to take action.
